HEIC to PNG converter
The converter on the home page also writes PNG. Choose PNG under Format before you add the photos, or switch to it and press Apply new settings. The photos are decoded and saved in this browser. Nothing is uploaded.
PNG or JPG?
PNG is lossless: every pixel that came out of the HEIC is written exactly. JPG throws away detail the eye is unlikely to miss, which is why it is so much smaller. For a phone photo, JPG at quality 90 is the right answer most of the time.
| JPG (quality 90) | PNG | |
|---|---|---|
| File size for a 12 MP phone photo | Roughly 2 to 5 MB | Several times the JPG |
| Quality loss | Small, hard to see at 90 | None |
| Transparency | No, flattened onto white | Kept when the HEIC has it |
| Photo details (EXIF) | Your choice: remove location, keep all or remove all | None are written |
| Best for | Sharing, email, web forms, printing | Editing again, exact pixels, tools that ask for PNG |
Convert HEIC to PNG, step by step
- Open the converter. Under Format, choose PNG. The quality slider turns off, because PNG has no quality setting.
- If the PNG only needs to be seen on a screen, choose a smaller Size, such as 2048 pixels on the longest side. That cuts the file a lot. A photo is never enlarged.
- Drop the HEIC photos, choose them, or drop a folder. Up to 50 photos at a time.
- Each photo shows a preview, its pixel size and its file size. One photo downloads on its own. For a batch, press Download all to get
heic-to-png.zip, built in the browser.
What a PNG from this page contains
The primary image of the HEIC, turned upright using the rotation stored in the file. If the HEIC holds several pictures, only the primary one is saved. There is no EXIF block in the PNG, so no GPS location, camera or capture date. If you need the date to survive, choose JPG with Remove location: it keeps the camera and date and wipes only the GPS coordinates.
Colours are the ones the browser decodes. Wide-gamut colour profiles from the camera are not embedded, which is also true of the JPG output.
Frequently asked questions
Is PNG better than JPG for HEIC photos?
Not usually. PNG is lossless, so it never adds compression artefacts, but a camera photo saved as PNG is usually several times larger than a JPG at quality 90. Pick PNG when you will edit the picture again, need exact pixels, or a tool asks for PNG. Pick JPG to share, email or upload.
Does the PNG keep the location, camera and date?
No. A PNG made here carries no EXIF at all, so there is no GPS location, camera model or capture date in it. The picture is saved upright. If you need those details, choose JPG with Keep all or Remove location.
Is transparency kept?
Yes, when the HEIC has an alpha channel, the PNG keeps it. Phone photos almost never have one. JPG has no transparency, so a JPG from this page flattens it onto white.
Can I make the PNG smaller?
Choose a smaller Size, such as 2048 or 1280 pixels on the longest side. That cuts the file a lot. PNG has no quality slider because it is lossless.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. The HEIC is decoded and the PNG is written in this browser tab. The site only counts anonymous events, such as a conversion finishing, and never receives the photo, its name or its location.
